DNP Project Abstract

Development of a Sexual Health History Tool for Nursing Home Residents

Purpose
Addressing sexuality is a vital component of caring for an individual holistically, yet is under addressed in long-term care/skilled-nursing facilities. The purpose of this project was to develop an initial sexual health history tool for use in long-term care/skilled-nursing facilities.

Methods
Guided by a review of the literature, a sexual health history tool was created and tailored to the older adult population and distributed to colleagues (N=21; Advanced Practice Registered Nurses) for feedback on the usefulness and practicality, prior to pilot implementation, within the practice setting.

Results
Most respondents found the tool easy to use and recommended that patient preference should guide how the tool is answered. Half of respondents reported they would use the tool within their own practice. Areas for improvement included inclusivity in gender options and answer response choices of “I prefer not to answer.”

Implications for Practice
Next steps include:

  1. Editing of the tool to address feedback of colleagues
  2. Testing with actual patients for readability and comprehension
  3. Piloting final tool with small scale test of implementation in long-term care facility
