2019 Activities and Accomplishments

Meetings/Speakers 

  1. ANA President Ernest GrantVUSN faculty member Clint Leonard initiated bringing Dr. Ernest Grant, President of the American Nurses Association (ANA), to speak at VUSN as part of the Dean’s Diversity Lecture Series. The event was attended  by more than 150 participants. Dr. Grant, who is the first male president of ANA, met with the Diversity and Inclusivity Committee as well as AAMN members.
  2. VUSN hosted Derek Griffith, PhD, professor of Medicine, Health and Society, who presented Why Do We Need to Consider Gender in Health Equity Research? Founder and director of the Institute for Research on Men’s Health in the College of Arts and Science, Griffith is a leading researcher on men’s health equity. Griffith spoke twice at VUSN, bringing attention to men’s health and minority men’s health issues, and the AAMN group sent invitations to the university’s interprofessional audience.
  3. AAMN worked to bring Peter Buerhaus, PhD, FAAN, an internationally recognized health care economist and workforce expert, to deliver the Dean’s Diversity Lecture in August 2018.

Service 

  1. Offered our services with AAMN to Dr. Griffith to help him with his study of men’s health, gathering data from community members in an ongoing study he is heading. 
  2. VUSN's Diversity and Inclusivity Committee is in process of writing a climate survey with input from AAMN group. 

Recruitment 

  1. During VUSN orientation, AAMN members conducted meetings (fall and spring).
  2. Sent out a welcome letter from AAMN to students last year and for this Fall 2019.
  3. Mentorship: we continue to recruit men from the community. One member, Andrew Dudley, was accepted to the program and is now the vice president of our AAMN chapter. 
  4. AAMN Conference: Attended 2018 AAMN conference, where VUSN's Admissions team sponsored a recruitment table.

Social:

The AAMN society wrapped up the year with a social bowling event at Pinewood Social Club to which all men in the VUSN program were invited.

  NOTE:  After the AAMN Best Schools recognition, male enrollment at VUSN increased 30%. 

VUSN's admission number in 2019 is 13% male.
