DNP Project Abstract

Interview Training in Nurse Residency Programs

Purpose
Assess interview skills training provided to BSN graduates in the VUMC NRP. Obtain information from the BSN programs in Tennessee about the interview skills training they provide to students. Summarize findings for VUMC NRP stakeholders and BSN program faculty.

Methods
Two surveys were emailed to participant groups that included VUMC NRP BSN graduates and 26 individual BSN program directors in TN. Analysis included descriptive statistics and identification of common themes.

Results
Ten of 26 (38.5%) BSN program directors responded. 90% provided training specific to nursing. Fifty-one of 200 (25%) VUMC NRP BSN graduates responded. 74% received training and 81% reported it as beneficial.

Implications for Practice
BSN programs should provide interview skills training to their students before graduation including resume formatting, simulated interviews, and feedback.
