Three Vanderbilt School of Nursing faculty members were recently recognized for excellence across various nursing disciplines with fellow designations and major awards. Independence Foundation Professor of Nursing Education Ruth Kleinpell, PhD, FAAN, FAANP, FNAP, MCCM, was honored for nurse practitioner advocacy. Assistant Professor Michael Gooch, DNP, MSN’05, PMC’08, and Assistant Professor Mulubrhan Mogos, PhD, FAHA, were awarded fellowships that exemplify excellence in the nursing profession.
Kleinpell received the prestigious 2024 American Association of Nurse Practitioners Tennessee State Advocate Award for Excellence. The State Advocate Award recognizes those who advance the nurse practitioner’s role, particularly in policy and advocacy.

Gooch was named a 2024 Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and joins a group of just over 900 nurse practitioners who have made substantial contributions to NP education, policy, clinical practice and research. He will be inducted into the academy during the AANP National Conference in Nashville on June 27.
Gooch was also inducted recently as a Fellow of the Academy of Air & Surface Transport Nurses at the Critical Care Transport Medicine Conference in Orange Beach, AL. He joins a group of inductees who have made enduring and substantial contributions to advance the critical care transport nursing profession. He is a board-certified acute care, family and emergency nurse practitioner and primarily works with the Emergency NP program at Vanderbilt.
Mogos was elected a Fellow of the American Heart Association, one of the world’s most renowned organizations of cardiovascular, stroke and brain health professionals. The FAHA designation recognizes professional and scientific accomplishments, volunteer leadership and service in support of the AHA mission.
