Nursing Education, Practice, Quality, and Retention (NEPQR) Simulation Education Training (SET) Program

The purpose of the Vanderbilt Nursing Education, Practice, Quality, and Retention (NEPQR) Simulation Education Training (SET) Program is to enhance nurse education and strengthen the nursing workforce through two pathways. First, we increase faculty skills, knowledge, and use of simulation during the Faculty Academy for Clinical Teaching in Simulation (FACTS Academy). Second, by increasing training opportunities for nursing students using simulation-based technology, we will achieve the goal of increasing the number and capacity of nursing students to address healthcare needs and improve patient outcomes of rural and/or medically underserved populations.

Goals & Objectives

The goal of the NEPQR-SET program is to increase the number and capacity of nursing students by addressing the health care needs and improving patient outcomes of rural and/or medically underserved populations.

  • Objective 1: Develop Partnerships

Expand academic-clinical partnerships to create experiential learning opportunities that prepare nursing students to efficiently address health equity for rural and underserved populations

  • Objective 2: Provide Simulation Training

Enhance training for faculty with a 3-day SET Faculty Academy to prepare faculty in using simulation-based technology

  • Objective 3: Establish interprofessional NEPQR-SET Training

Using the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACLS) competencies, plan, develop, select and test a collaborative interprofessional NEPQR-SET of virtual, manikin, and standardized patient simulations

  • Objective 4: Develop Evaluation Metrics

Develop evaluation metrics to test level two sub-competencies for the NEPQR-SET using virtual, manikin, and standardized patient simulations

  • Objective 5: Integrate Simulation Education

Integrate simulation education focused on promoting health equity and cultural competence in the clinical priority areas of Behavioral/Mental health including Homelessness, Maternal and Child Health, and Aging Populations

  • Objective 6: Increase Diversity of the Nursing Workforce

Increase the diversity of the nursing workforce to better address the needs of the populations they serve by recruiting and supporting students and faculty, including those from diverse populations.
