VUSN to host research day August 21
The Vanderbilt University School of Nursing will host its 2024 Research Day Wednesday, August 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the School of Nursing. The day will be sponsored by VUSN’s Center for Research Development and Scholarship and the Vanderbilt Center for Research on Inequality and Health, with generous support from the Patricia Meador Fund.
This year’s research day will feature keynote lectures from Julie Ward, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Health, and Society at Vanderbilt University College of Arts and Science, and Rebecca Schnall, PhD, MPH, BSN, FAAN, FACMI, Mary Dickey Lindsay Professor of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion at Columbia University School of Nursing.
The event is free to attend and open to the greater Vanderbilt and VUMC communities, but attendees are asked to register by Monday, August 12. Other activities that day include a moderated poster session, Q&A with keynote speakers, and posters to be displayed in the Colleen Conway-Welch Atrium. Students, faculty and staff from VU and VUMC are invited to submit an abstract for the poster session here. Deadline for abstract submission is August 8. Ward’s research focuses on opportunities and strategies to improve public health and safety systems for the prevention of violence and violence-related trauma in community spaces. Her recent studies have explored public health leaders’ experience of pandemic-related workplace violence, public support for firearm policies, perceptions of firearm-related public safety, views of minoritized gun owners, and fatal and nonfatal shootings by police.
Schnall’s research targets understanding the health information needs of individuals to improve the access to easy-to-use health-related information for persons living and at-risk for HIV. Her work supports the premise that the development of information resources tailored to individuals’ needs is fundamental for health promotion and disease prevention.
