Vanderbilt University School of Nursing and HealthStream have partnered to bring Vanderbilt’s academic and practice expertise to nurses everywhere through a library of microlearning and continuing education modules. The partnership will make professional growth more accessible, relevant, and holistic for working nurses nationwide.
The partnership will kick off with a special launch event Monday, December 8, at 12:30 p.m. CT. Vanderbilt School of Nursing Dean Pamela Jeffries, PhD, RN, FAAN, ANEF, FSSH, and education leaders will share the philosophy behind the partnership, introduce initial offerings, and discuss how these microlearning courses allow nurses to advance clinical skills and specialty practice, prevention and whole-person care, and leadership development.
“In today’s fast-moving health care landscape, the need for professional education transcends traditional academic boundaries. Through this new partnership with HealthStream, we are expanding access to clinical insights shaped by Vanderbilt’s renowned faculty and practice leaders to nurses everywhere,” Jeffries said. “This innovative approach delivers cutting-edge, evidence-based, practice-ready education calibrated to professional requirements, learning preferences and schedule demands of contemporary nursing professionals.”
The new library of microlearning courses, created by Vanderbilt faculty experts and partners, includes topics like trauma-informed communication, planetary and cellular wellness, healthy aging, and motivational approaches to patient behavior change.
The VUSN/HealthStream partnership represents a key component in the school’s Office of External Learning (OEL) initiative. The initiative, instituted by Jeffries and led by Director of External Learning, Annie Youngblood, has a mission to share Vanderbilt’s practice, education, and clinical expertise with working nurses through institutes, conferences, microlearning, online events, workshops, and seminars.
“As health care continues to undergo significant transformations, nursing education must correspondingly adapt and advance. VUSN’s leadership in nursing education calls for us to develop strategic solutions to help nurses continue to grow in knowledge and job fulfilment,” said Dean Jeffries, who also holds the Valere Potter Distinguished Chair in Nursing. “Our comprehensive approach will not only support individual nurses and health systems but will also address the challenges associated with the current nursing workforce shortage.”
Initial offerings reflect the breadth of OEL’s developing domains and serve as examples of the high-quality content nurses can expect. They include:
- Disease prevention and health promotion training made available through education assets granted to Vanderbilt by the Coalition for Better Health. The coalition was a Tennessee-based non-profit that built one of the region’s most impactful prevention and public-health training programs, now preserved and expanded through the School of Nursing.
- Caring Science microlearning developed in collaboration with the Watson Caring Science Institute, which brings human-centered clinical practice concepts into short, practical modules.
- Research, clinical practice, and leadership topics
