Brigit Carter, PhD, RN, FAAN, Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer for the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, will present “Amplifying Social Justice to Achieve Inclusive Excellence” from 12-1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, in NA 161 for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Annual Commemorative Lecture.
She is a retired U. S. Navy commander and professor emerita at the Duke University School of Nursing, where she served as the associate dean for diversity and inclusion and in various other capacities, including director of Duke’s accelerated BSN program. She was also project director for two HRSA Nursing Workforce Diversity grants to increase underrepresented minorities in nursing and understanding of social determinants among undergraduate nursing students. She studies student’s experiences with microaggressions and develops strategies to mitigate their impact.
Carter is an American Academy of Nursing fellow, Atlantic Fellow for Health Equity and Duke Teaching for Equity fellow. In 2020, the American Nurses Association recognized her with its Diversity in Nursing Award for her contributions to the advancement of diversity, equity and inclusion. She holds a BSN from North Carolina Central University, MSN from University of North Carolina at Greensboro and PhD in Nursing from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
