VUSN spring 2022 semester starts Jan. 4; new health and safety protocols announced
Following Vanderbilt University's announcement that undergraduate and most graduate schools would postpone the start of the spring 2022 semester until January 17, Dean Pamela Jeffries provided specific information for the School of Nursing. Highlights included the information that VUSN classes would start January 4 as previously scheduled, that staff would work remotely until January 18, and that most specialty program classes would start in hybrid/remote formats for the first few weeks of 2022. Tears of joy, tears of sorrow — College sweethearts, a COVID unit wedding, and a love story that ended too soon
The first week of October, 2020, Vanderbilt School of Nursing alumna Sherri Randolph, MSN'97, planned to marry her college sweetheart, Stacey Bruff. As things turned out, Sherri and Stacey got married a few days earlier, Sept. 21, in the only wedding ever to take place in the COVID unit at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Tragically and unexpectedly, Stacey died two days after the wedding. Sherri was devastated, and she still has a hard time talking about Stacey without tears welling up. There is a lot of sadness about how things turned out. She knows that all over the world there are millions of lives that have been changed forever by the COVID-19 pandemic, and hers is one of them. Ridner returns to cancer patient research and care during Research Ramp-up to advance intervention studies
When in-person research activities at Vanderbilt were put on hold in mid-March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Sheila Ridner, PhD'03, MSN'00, FAAN, the Martha Rivers Ingram Professor of Nursing and director of the PhD in Nursing Science Program, was the primary investigator on two research studies with oncology patients. “The participants in the lymphedema prevention study had given us five years of their lives, and so we also felt an ethical responsibility to finish our work in supporting them,” Ridner said. News outlets have reported that more than 190 people in Iran died from drinking bootleg alcohol, possibly related to the mistaken belief that drinking alcohol can prevent COVID-19 infection. Vanderbilt School of Nursing professor Mariann Piano, PhD, RN, FAAN, FAHA, sets the facts straight about Coronavirus 2019 and alcohol, including reasons to monitor your alcohol consumption during the current COVID-19 pandemic. Piano, the Nancy and Hilliard Travis Professor of Nursing and Senior Associate Dean for Research, studies the adverse effects of unhealthy alcohol drinking on the cardiovascular system.
