Eligibility
You may be eligible for this study if:
- If you have been told by your doctor or healthcare provider that you have prediabetes but are not currently on medications for your prediabetes.
- You are 25 to 59 years old years and have at least one child between the ages of 6-18 years living at home with you.
- You live in Nashville, TN or surrounding areas.
To determine if you may be eligible to participate, we will ask you to come to our research facility at Vanderbilt University to collect you and your child’s height and weight and also collect a small sample of blood from your finger to confirm your prediabetes status.
If you are fully eligible and would like to enroll, you and your child will be randomly selected to be in one of two groups.
- If you are in the Whole Foods Counseling group you will meet with a Registered Dietitian one time to talk about how to help you and your family follow a healthy diet pattern.
- If you are in the Whole Foods Healthy Eating group we will give you and your family food for 8 weeks to cook and eat and we will ask that your family participates in the meal planning, preparation, and cooking (as age appropriate). We will also ask you to eat meals together as a family. You will meet with a Registered Dietitian weekly for 8 weeks to ask any questions you may have about your diet plan. After 8 weeks, we will ask you to continue the diet program on your own for the last 4 weeks of the program. You will be asked to provide a small at-home stool sample at two times study and we will also ask you to wear a continuous glucose monitoring device for 15-days three times during the study to measure your daily glucose levels.
- Families will receive kitchen tools, diet counseling from a Registered Dietitian, and monetary compensation between $115 to $145 for participating
