Research

Addressing Barriers to Patient Centered Outcomes Research

This initiative aims to learn how to involve in research patients and families who have recently experienced intensive care unit (ICU) stays.

Animal-Assisted Interventions in Childhood Cancer

This study looks at whether animal-assisted therapy reduces the stress of anxiety of the children undergoing chemotherapy, and whether it improves the quality of life for the children (ages 3-17) and their families.

Therapeutic Music in the Intensive Care Unit

It is well recognized that music can have an impact on health. In 2019, a therapeutic music program was launched to provide live music for patients hospitalized in the intensive care units at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Participants include Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Vanderbilt University School of Nursing, Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt, the Music Cognition Lab, and the Program for Music, Mind and Society at Vanderbilt.

Student Opportunities

Behavioral Health Workforce Education and Training (BHWET) Program

The Behavioral Health Workforce Education and Training program is a grant-funded program for Vanderbilt psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner students who have an interest in rural and medically underserved communities. Students participate during the spring and summer semesters of the PMHNP specialty year. The program includes additional educational content and learning activities, as well as longitudinal clinical experiences with community partners specializing in care of the underserved.

Collaborative Academic Practice (CAP) Program

The CAP program is a grant-funded for program for Vanderbilt family nurse practitioner, nurse-midwifery/family nurse practitioner, and adult-gerontology primary care nurse practitioner students who have an interest in rural and medically underserved communities. Students participate during the spring and summer semesters of their specialty year. The program includes additional educational content and learning activities, as well as longitudinal clinical experiences with community partners specializing in care of the underserved.

Specific Populations

Community Health Worker Training Program of Tennessee

The Community Health Worker Training Program of Tennessee is a partnership between VUSN, the Tennessee Community Health Worker Association and the Rural Health Association of Tennessee. The program focuses on educating and increasing the quantity and quality of certified community health workers in the state.

MEADOW (Midwifery Education – Access & Diversity for Optimizing Workforce)

MEADOW seeks to grow and diversify the maternal and perinatal nursing workforce through support for education and training in rural and underserved communities. Full-time nurse-midwifery and dual midwifery/FNP students from rural or underserved areas or populations historically under-represented in midwifery, and full-time nurse-midwifery and dual midwifery/FNP students who wish to work in rural or underserved areas or with medically underserved populations and/or individuals with limited English proficiency are encouraged to explore this program.

Project SHARE

Project SHARE (SHaring Strategies for Health Professional Faculty and Student REcruitment) aims to launch a campus-wide collaboration for the graduate health professional degree programs established at Vanderbilt University. Intentional and strategic recruitment and support for diversifying health professional careers would advance Vanderbilt's reputation as a leading global institution.

Nurse Residencies

Community-Based Nurse Practitioner Fellowship

This is VUSN’s HRSA-funded Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Residency program. It prepares APRNs to work in rural and underserved communities. The NPR program increases the APRN primary care workforce in rural and underserved communities through collaboration with partner community-based health clinics. It provides funding and support for five fellows (3 FNPs/AGPCNPs, 1 PMHNP, and 1 CNM or WHNP) each year.
