faculty profile
Christian Ketel DNP, RN, FNAP
Associate Professor
Co-Director Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance Inter-Institutional and Interprofessional Student Program
Bio
Dr. Ketel is currently an Assistant Professor of Nursing at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing (VUSN). He has had over 15 years of experience designing, implementing, and evaluating healthcare systems benefitting medically vulnerable populations. Most notably, his work with interprofessional team based primary care and behavioral health integration programs have sustained and expanded into women's health and midwifery/obstetric populations. Based on this work creating and leading these programs, Vanderbilt University Medical Center and School of Nursing have improved the physical, mental, and social wellbeing of over 10,000 medically vulnerable residents of Middle Tennessee and trained hundreds of interprofessional students. In recent years, Dr. Ketel has disseminated his work on an organizational, state, and national level in numerous publications and presentations. Most recently he has been called open during the COVID-19 pandemic to develop and implement an emergent community vaccine program for Vanderbilt. This program has combined the catchment areas, resources, and volunteers from over 20 community partners serving at-risk, vulnerable patients in Nashville, TN and surrounding rural counties. The program was designed by Dr. Ketel, and his co-director, Dr. Carrie Plummer, and includes three strategies: 1) pop-up style vaccine events/clinics, 2) proactive door-to-door canvasing with vaccine to bring vaccines to people's doorsteps, and 3) community referral network with local home health, hospice, and faith-based organizations to bring vaccines directly to home-bound individuals. This program has vaccinated well over 6,000 vulnerable Tennesseans and allowed many students from interprofessional backgrounds to have a positive impact on the health and wellness of their communities. Lastly, Dr. Ketel serves as the co-author and Evaluator for three Nursing Workforce Recruitment and Retention programs at Vanderbilt School of Nursing. These include the Advance Nursing Education Workforce (ANEW), Advanced Nursing Education-Nurse Practitioner Residency (ANE-NPR), and Behavioral Health Workforce Education and Training (BHWET) Collaborative Funding Agreements. Along with his Vanderbilt duties, he is also the co-Director of the Meharry Vanderbilt Alliance Inter-Institutional and Interprofessional Student Program. Dr. Ketel teaches primarily in the Doctorate of Nursing Practice program in the Health Systems Leadership and Informatic specialties.
