School of Nursing designated Center of Excellence (News Around the School)
The National League for Nursing has named Vanderbilt University School of Nursing an NLN Center of Excellence in recognition of its high standards of educational excellence and visionary leadership.
The NLN is the nation’s foremost organization for nursing faculty and leaders in nursing education. Designation as a COE signifies that a nursing school has achieved high levels of excellence. Schools may apply for COE status in the areas of enhancing student learning and professional development, promoting pedagogical expertise of faculty or advancing the science of nursing education. VUSN was recognized for its sustained excellence in promoting faculty expertise.
VUSN Dean Linda D. Norman, DSN, FAAN, the Valere Potter Menefee Professor of Nursing, said the school’s more than a century of educational innovation and support of faculty development were factors in obtaining the designation. “Vanderbilt University School of Nursing has long been recognized for excellence and innovation in teaching, practice and research,” she said. “This honor recognizes that the school and its faculty are committed to sustained educational excellence and innovative pedagogical initiatives that fuel world-class learning for students and educators alike.”
VUSN is one of 10 nursing programs receiving the 2019 designation. The new NLN Centers of Excellence were formally recognized during the 2019 NLN Educational Summit in September.

Two Vanderbilt School of Nursing faculty received the annual Martin Luther King Jr. award presented by VUSN and Vanderbilt University School of Medicine during the 2020 MLK Commemorative Lecture on Monday. Assistant Professors Tamika Hudson, DNP, MSN’12, and Jannyse Starks, DNP’11, MSN,’09 were honored for their work with the Community Action Poverty Simulation, which helps students, faculty, staff and community leaders experience life in poverty through a planned simulation. School of Medicine Assistant Professor Adriana Bialostozky, MD, was also honored, receiving the MLK award for her work in providing culturally competent care in pediatrics.

Brooke Faught, DNP, named 2019 Founder’s Medalist

The 2019 Founder’s Medalist for the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing was already a successful entrepreneur, institute director and nurse practitioner before earning her doctor of nursing practice. During her two-year doctor of nursing practice program at VUSN, Brooke Faught worked 60+ hours a week as director of the Women’s Institute for Sexual Health. The mother of three daughters (one with special needs), Brooke also volunteered in the community, gave professional presentations and served on the executive board of directors for two different professional organizations. Her DNP project focused on ways that providers might help young women with Down syndrome receive relevant and appropriate sexuality education.
