Commencement 2020: Nurse-Midwifery Grad Vernicia Winford, MSN’20
The first baby Vernicia Winford helped deliver into the world as a certified nurse-midwife was her own niece, born just a few days after the nursing graduate student passed her American Midwifery Certification Board exam last December. As a dual nurse-midwifery/family nurse practitioner student in the School of Nursing, Winford saw patients of all ages and genders in her clinical work at the Family Clinic in McMinnville, about 75 miles southeast of Nashville, while completing her FNP studies. News outlets have reported that more than 190 people in Iran died from drinking bootleg alcohol, possibly related to the mistaken belief that drinking alcohol can prevent COVID-19 infection. Vanderbilt School of Nursing professor Mariann Piano, PhD, RN, FAAN, FAHA, sets the facts straight about Coronavirus 2019 and alcohol, including reasons to monitor your alcohol consumption during the current COVID-19 pandemic. Piano, the Nancy and Hilliard Travis Professor of Nursing and Senior Associate Dean for Research, studies the adverse effects of unhealthy alcohol drinking on the cardiovascular system. Two Vanderbilt School of Nursing faculty received the annual Martin Luther King Jr. award presented by VUSN and Vanderbilt University School of Medicine during the 2020 MLK Commemorative Lecture on Monday. Assistant Professors Tamika Hudson, DNP, MSN’12, and Jannyse Starks, DNP’11, MSN,’09 were honored for their work with the Community Action Poverty Simulation, which helps students, faculty, staff and community leaders experience life in poverty through a planned simulation.
