Former faculty and alumna Sue McConnell Jones dies
It was with sadness that we learned that former faculty member and alumna Lenita "Sue" McConnell Jones, BSN’67, MSN’74, died August 29. A Double 'Dore, she was one of VUSN’s first nurse practitioner graduates as well as one of the first 100 NPs in the U.S. Jones was instrumental in the creation of the first certification process for NPs and enjoyed a long career as practitioner, professor and nursing director. Does the school have a measurable diversity, equity and inclusion plan, for example, or does the school provide a variety of educational opportunities on diversity, inclusion and equity topics? VUSN Assistant Professor Kate Clouse has created an app for smartphones to help South African mothers with HIV stay connected to health care. Nearly one in three pregnant women attending antenatal care in South Africa is living with HIV. Commencement 2020: Nurse-Midwifery Grad Vernicia Winford, MSN’20
The first baby Vernicia Winford helped deliver into the world as a certified nurse-midwife was her own niece, born just a few days after the nursing graduate student passed her American Midwifery Certification Board exam last December. As a dual nurse-midwifery/family nurse practitioner student in the School of Nursing, Winford saw patients of all ages and genders in her clinical work at the Family Clinic in McMinnville, about 75 miles southeast of Nashville, while completing her FNP studies. Vanderbilt School of Nursing professor Mariann Piano, PhD, RN, FAAN, FAHA, sets the facts straight about Coronavirus 2019 and alcohol, including reasons to monitor your alcohol consumption during the current COVID-19 pandemic. Piano, the Nancy and Hilliard Travis Professor of Nursing and Senior Associate Dean for Research, studies the adverse effects of unhealthy alcohol drinking on the cardiovascular system.
