Women's Health/Gender-Related Nurse Practitioner

We are the #4 Grad School of Nursing MSN. If you like the idea of delivering primary health care to women from adolescence through child bearing and advanced years, the Women’s Health/Gender-Related Nurse Practitioner (WHGRNP) program is for you. As a WHGRNP, you will provide gynecologic care, low and high-risk pregnancy management, family planning, sexually transmitted infection diagnosis and treatment, and primary care to women. Your wide scope of practice will include health care management, disease prevention and health promotion.

Our Strengths

We are next door to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, one of the nation’s top academic medical centers. But most important, we are committed to the success of our students. One of the largest women’s health programs in the country, we offer a rigorous curriculum taught by nationally known, doctorally prepared faculty who share their own, diverse, real-world experiences and provide clinical experiences in a variety of practice settings. Our students benefit from close-knit faculty-student groups and you will also benefit from classmates with diverse backgrounds and experiences that will enrich your learning experience.

Our Curriculum

Through a comprehensive curriculum that uses traditional classroom settings, simulated experiences and clinical training, you will develop deep primary care knowledge and clinical reasoning skills. You will examine influences that affect women’s lives and emphasize wellness. Curriculum content includes topic areas such as breast health, contraception, pregnancy options counseling, hormone therapy, sexually transmitted infections, sexual health, cultural humility and interpersonal violence. You will be exposed to a group of faculty members who combine classroom instruction with hands-on clinical practice experience for a wider frame of reference.

Graduation from this MSN specialty prepares you to take the Women’s Health/Gender-Related Nurse Practitioner certification exam offered by the National Certification Corporation. Our students consistently score above national rates on this exam.

Educational Formats

If you have a nursing background, this specialty is offered in a modified distance learning format that allows you to earn your degree without having to relocate. If you do not have a prior nursing education background, you must first complete your PreSpecialty year within a daily commute of Nashville. When you progress to the specialty portion of your education, you will learn via modified distance learning and will not have to live in the Nashville vicinity. More Info >
