Julia Hereford History
Julia Hereford, BSN’35, was a School of Nursing faculty member, and later, beloved dean. During her tenure as dean in the 1950s and 1960s, she brought significant changes to the nursing school’s curriculum. Hereford was instrumental in developing VUSN’s graduate program, the first graduate nursing program in Tennessee. Decades later, the Alumnae Association Scholarship was renamed in her honor. In 1984, Dean Colleen Conway-Welch established the school’s donor society, naming it the Julia Hereford Society to honor the legacy of former dean Julia Jane Hereford, PhD, RN, for her significant contribution to VUSN and to honor those who generously support the School of Nursing.

It all started with a gift. Financial support from Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt in 1873 led to a journey of global impact. Charitable gifts from alumni and friends provide critical support for our students, faculty members and programs. The Julia Hereford Society recognizes financial support of Vanderbilt School of Nursing by those who make annual gifts of $2,500 and up. Alumni who received their degrees within the last 10 years are eligible for membership with a commitment of $1,000 annually.
