Who We Are

We are a group of Vanderbilt nursing students who believe that equity and social responsibility in health care extends beyond the walls of our hospitals, clinics, or the borders of our country. We guide our actions by the principles of the WHO sustainability goals, nursing principles, and social determinants of health (SDoH).

Our Values

As of 2024, nurses and midwives account for nearly 50% of the global health workforce and play a critical role in health care research, policy change, prevention, treatment, as well as environmental justice initiatives across the world. NGH advocates for the active engagement, leadership, and empowerment of nurses in addressing global health challenges, recognizing their crucial role in alleviating the worldwide nursing shortage. NGH also believes that the protection of the natural environment is inextricably tied to human health. We recognize planetary health as one of the largest factors that impact human health and quality of life globally and acknowledge the urgent need to act.

Our Mission

  • To enable nursing students to become leaders in issues of global and planetary health.
  • To provide learning and discussion forums in areas of global health and environmental justice, providing a platform for faculty, students, community members, and guest lecturers to disseminate ideas that enlighten, inspire, and challenge VUSN students
  • To bring together a network of students and leaders looking to address broad areas of global and planetary health, to encourage camaraderie in the field, and to develop scholarly, academic, and interprofessional collaboration.
  • To engage in global-as-local service learning opportunities that address inequities in community and environmental health.
  • To act as a liaison to interdisciplinary global health groups around Vanderbilt campus.

Membership

This group is open to any VUSN student. Interested students can email student leadership to be added to the NGH email list.

Encouraging Dialogue

Nurses for Global Health hosts open discussions each semester to foster understanding and meaningful connections among students and faculty. These pithy sessions allow students and faculty a safe space to openly and honestly discuss how to build meaningful relationships in the current environment. Students and faculty share stories, and work to build empathy and meaningful dialogue to foster long-term change and relationship building. Challenging topics, including perspectives on race in America and globally, are explored to encourage deeper awareness and positive change.
