Asian Pacific Islander and Desi American (APIDA) Student Nurses

The objective of VUSN’s Asian Pacific Islander and Desi American (APIDA) Student Nurses organization is to serve as a Vanderbilt student organizing body that strives to positively affect the health and well-being of APIDA members and their communities. APIDA aims to provide networking opportunities for all members and serve as a means of social support for students matriculating through VUSN. This organization seeks to collaborate with faculty and staff on scholarly projects and nurture personal growth through both academic and professional work.

Mission

VUSN APIDA Student Nurses believe that a nurse’s advocacy extends beyond the bedside, serving as a powerful voice for their communities. Rooted in our rich personal histories and shared experiences, we are committed to addressing the health care needs of all populations. Our mission is to create an environment where students and communities grow together, improving health outcomes through culturally informed education, advocacy and meaningful collaboration. We partner with the community to promote visibility and raise awareness of health disparities within the APIDA diaspora, fostering open dialogue and engagement that extends beyond students and health care providers to benefit all people.

History

VUSN APIDA was formed in 2014 with the intention of fostering discussions relating to the health of all individuals with an emphasis on Asian Pacific Islander and Desi American communities. As the number of members has substantially increased since it first began, VUSN APIDA has developed from a social gathering-oriented organization to one that seeks opportunities for community service involvement. In 2019, VUSN APIDA secured an organizational membership with Asian American/Pacific Islander Nurses Association, Inc. (AAPINA). Membership with AAPINA provides access to additional learning resources and extends our VUSN community to national and international levels.
