VUSN to hold first-ever White Coat Ceremony

The Vanderbilt University School of Nursing will mark a historic milestone on May 15 with its first white coat ceremony, celebrating the launch of a new tradition while honoring the inaugural class of nurse anesthesia students. The ceremony will formally welcome incoming nurse anesthesia students into Vanderbilt’s newly launched program with the presentation of a  white coat marked with the school logo, symbolizing the beginning of their new careers and professional identity.

“White coat ceremonies represent a defining moment in a nurse’s professional journey, symbolizing the transition into clinical practice and a commitment to patient-centered care,” said Dean Pam Jeffries, PhD, RN, FAAN, ANEF, FSSH. “These ceremonies are rooted in the principles of safety and ethical responsibility and will connect our students to VUSN’s rich history and enduring legacy.”

While white coat ceremonies have become increasingly popular for nursing and medical schools, VUSN has never held them. In addition to the May 15 event for nurse anesthesia students, the school plans to hold a white coat ceremony for incoming master of nursing students in the fall.

The ceremonies are designed to bring together students, faculty, family members and friends for a shared moment of pride and purpose as they begin their careers as health care professionals. The May 15 event also underscores the professional values that guide students as they begin their nurse anesthesia careers.

School of Nursing supporters are invited to underwrite the gift of a white coat for incoming students and welcome them into the VUSN community. Additionally, donors are encouraged to leave a message of encouragement that will be shared with the student during the ceremony. Learn more about sponsoring a white coat here.
