How to Create a Written Response Quiz Question

The purpose of this article is to explain how to create a long answer question in the Brightspace Quiz tool.

The Long Answer Question is the only question type that cannot be automatically graded by Brightspace. Answers to these questions must be manually graded by an instructor.

Create Question

Step 1

Select question type

  1. Navigate to the new question page from a specific quiz or the Question Library
  2. Select Written Response (WR)


Step 2

Create your question

  1. Enter the Question Text
  2. Select Enable the HTML Editor for student responses if you want to give students options for formatting and inserting stuff into their answer. When this option is disabled, students will have a large text box in which to write their responses.
  3. Enter Default Points (this can be edited later if you are unsure)
  4. Question preview appears on the right side of the screen
  5. Click Save


Feedback (optional)

Step 3

Add feedback for users

  1. Click Options
  2. Click Add Feedback
  3. Enter comments for Overall Feedback
  4. Click Save


Add Hint (optional)

Step 4

Add a hint for users

  1. Click Options
  2. Click Add Hint
  3. Enter Hint text
  4. Click Save


TIP: In order for students to see the hint when taking the quiz, Allow hints must be enabled on the Properties tab

Question Description (optional)

Step 5

Add a description of the question for instructors

  1. Click Options
  2. Click Add Short Description
  3. Enter Short Description text
  4. Click Save


Answer Key (optional)

Step 6

You can add an answer key for yourself or other instructors who may be grading the question

  1. Click Options
  2. Click Add Answer Key
  3. Enter the answer key that evaluators will see when grading this question
  4. Click Save


Custom Response Box Size (optional)

Step 7

Customize the response box size

  1. Click Options
  2. Click Add Add Custom Response Box Size
  3. Select the response box size from the drop down menu
  4. Click Save
